Discussing the transition from the fuel-based energy and the potential of hydrogen

Earlier in March, experts gathered at the LESGO workshop to discuss the potential of hydrogen in the transportation sector. The workshop focused on discussing the challenges of storing hydrogen and the potential for developing efficient solutions.

Experts in the field of hydrogen storage gathered at Vartov, a historical building located in the city center of Copenhagen, for a workshop focused on the potential of hydrogen in the path towards the new economy. The workshop featured presentations and discussions on the challenges of storing hydrogen and developing efficient and affordable solutions to achieve a carbon-free economy.

The first speaker was Luis Guillermo Guerling, Knowledge and Technology Transfer officer at ICFO, who gave a presentation where he highlighted the clear market need for hydrogen storage and the solution that LESGO proposes by using reduced graphene oxide. Guerling emphasized the importance of legislation and regulations in accelerating the research and deployment of hydrogen solutions and raised the issue of societal acceptance.

Up next, Ivano Castelli, Associate Professor in the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage at the Technical University of Denmark, presented the current research at DTU and discussed the discovery process of new materials for hydrogen storage. Castelli explained what new could be potentially useful and highlighted the importance of balancing high efficiency and high price with availability and abundance.

Lastly, Nello Li Pira, Global R&I Materials Manager at the Centro di Richerche Fiat, discussed the materials and trends for vehicle and transportation transformation. During the Q&A session, attendees discussed the availability of new materials, the constraining factors such as abundance, efficiency, and price, and the recyclability of graphene.

The panel discussion involved the three speakers in a conversation regarding the industrial vision and the balance between research interests and industrial needs.

On the second day, participants joined a hands-on session where they had to pinpoint and prioritize the challenges for hydrogen in transportation and discuss possible solutions. The workshop highlighted the importance of developing efficient and affordable hydrogen storage solutions and the need for societal acceptance to achieve a carbon-free economy.
